One of the more futuristic machines working the fields at Husker Harvest Days this week isn’t a new tractor at all. PTx Trimble is demonstrating its OutRun autonomy system at the 2026 show in Grand Island, Nebraska, turning conventional tractors into driverless machines capable of handling grain carts and performing fieldwork without an operator in the cab.
The system is part of Husker Harvest Days’ autonomous equipment demonstrations, giving attendees a chance to see the technology working under field conditions. Rather than requiring farmers to replace existing tractors with purpose-built autonomous machines, OutRun is designed as a retrofit platform that adds autonomous capabilities to compatible equipment they may already own.
From Grain Cart to Autonomous Tractor
OutRun began commercially as an autonomous grain-cart solution. During harvest, the combine operator can use an iPad to stage the tractor and cart, summon it to the combine, unload on the go and send it back toward a designated truck-loading area without another person driving the tractor.
At Husker Harvest Days, PTx says the harvest system now supports multiple combines and tractors, expanding the concept beyond a simple one-combine, one-cart arrangement. That could be particularly useful on larger operations where several machines are working the same field and coordinating grain movement requires multiple operators.
The system is compatible with select John Deere 8R tractors, including IVT and Powershift models, John Deere 9R tractors, and Fendt 900 and 1000 Series tractors. The grain cart itself can remain conventional, allowing farms to add autonomy without replacing an entire equipment lineup.
Autonomy Moves Beyond Harvest
PTx is also demonstrating OutRun performing tillage at Husker Harvest Days, an important step in expanding the technology beyond harvest. The platform can be used for operations including tillage, land rolling and harrowing, with an operator establishing field boundaries and obstacles before creating a plan for the tractor to follow.
Operators can establish no-till, slow and no-go zones, select different path plans and change operating speeds remotely. Cameras and sensors provide a 360-degree view around the machine while the system can send images and alerts back to the operator.
The tillage system also received a 2026 Davidson Prize from the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers and the Association of Equipment Manufacturers. The original OutRun grain-cart system received the same recognition in 2025.
Expanding into fieldwork makes OutRun more than a single-purpose harvest tool. The same autonomy platform can potentially keep a compatible tractor working during several parts of the crop cycle.
What Happens When Nobody Is in the Cab?
Operating a tractor without someone in the seat creates an obvious safety question. PTx says sensors continuously monitor the area around the tractor, allowing the machine to slow and stop when an obstruction is detected. Operators can also establish virtual field boundaries and no-go zones the tractor is not permitted to enter.
During grain-cart operation, the combine operator retains control through an iPad while continuing to operate the combine. PTx says the system can operate at speeds up to 15 mph and on field inclines up to 15 degrees. OutRun uses Starlink connectivity and is sold through a one-time hardware investment plus an annual service fee rather than per-acre or hourly charges.
A Different Path to Farm Autonomy
Autonomous farm equipment itself is no longer a new concept. What makes systems like OutRun notable is the possibility of bringing autonomy to tractors already working on farms rather than waiting for those machines to be replaced.
That approach could become increasingly relevant as farms look for ways to get more from expensive late-model equipment while dealing with tight labor availability during planting and harvest. During harvest, a combine operator who previously needed another person in the grain-cart tractor can potentially manage both machines. During tillage, an employee who would have spent hours driving back and forth across a field can be available for other work while monitoring the autonomous tractor remotely.
The result isn’t necessarily a farm without operators, but rather a farm where each operator can potentially manage more equipment during narrow windows when both machinery and labor are at a premium.
Husker Harvest Days provides a fitting place to demonstrate that idea. Instead of showing what an autonomous farm might look like someday, PTx is putting the technology on recognizable tractors and sending them into the field today.
